Non EU students: VISA and Residence Permit

NON-EU CITIZEN:

  • Non-EU students wishing to study in Italy for more than 90 days have to apply for a study Visa to enter Italy.
  • Non-EU students who wish to study for less than 90 days, find out from the Italian Embassy (or Consulate) if a study Visa is required
  • United Kingdom students If you are a student from the United Kingdom (UK) or from another non-EU country residing in the United Kingdom, carefully read the instructions on the website of the competent Consulate in London for "Exchange and mobility programs" .

Important: you must apply for a Visa for "Study –Exchange and Mobility Programme".

How to apply for Visa?

To apply for a Visa you must:

  • contact the Embassy /Consulate in the country of your residence to find out the requirements to obtain an entry visa for "Study –Exchange and Mobility Programme" 
  • have a valid passport
  • Register on UNIVERSITALY PORTALE and apply online for the visa (further information about this step can be found below, in the section "Universitaly Portal: online study Visa application")

The Invitation letter will be issued by the International Office in late June (after the International Office has received all Application documents).

Please note: apply well in advance for the visa, as the visa process can take several months.

NON-EU STUDENTS ENROLLED IN A UNIVERSITY IN THE EUROPEAN UNION

If you are enrolled at a University in the European Union (Schengen Area) and you have a residence permit for study purposes issued in a member country of the European Union (Schengen Area) which covers the entire mobility period and which is renewable in the country where it was issued, you must check at the Visa Office of the Italian Embassy in the country where you currently reside and study, if you are exempted from a Visa. (It is recommended to have a written reply by e-mail from the Visa Office)

In case  you do not need to apply for the visa, upon arrival you will have to apply for Declaration of presence (see detailed information below, in the section "Stay in Italy- Declaration of presence/Dichiarazione di presenza application) and you will not have to apply for a residence permit.

Students with dual citizenship, including a country in the European Union: are exempted of visa and Italian Permit of residence application.They are required to submit the Italian passport  during the Erasmus online application procedure
