There are two types of selection. For any information regarding the type of selection and the admission tests calendar for each PhD Program cycle, please refer to the forms included in attachment A of this call for applications.

Selection type A

The test for admission to the program consists in the following:

  • evaluation of academic qualifications and academic record, if any;
  • written test;
  • oral test (optional).

The tests are aimed at assessing the knowledge, skills and predisposition of the applicant to scientific research; the oral test consists in the assessment of the applicant’s knowledge of at least one foreign language. The admission test may also be taken in foreign language, at the request of the person concerned and following the PhD Program Board’s prior approval.

The Board assigns to each applicant:

  • up to 30 points for the evaluation of academic qualifications and academic record, if any;
  • up to 30 points for each of the two tests according to the assessed merits.

Applicants who have achieved not less than 21/30 are also admitted to the oral test. The test is passed if the applicant achieves a score of at least 21/30. Examinations are held at the University of Bergamo. If not previously specified in this call for applications, the calendar for the written test, with indication of day, month and time, will be communicated to the persons concerned at least 10 days before the scheduled date. The date of the oral test, if not previously specified in this call for applications, will be communicated to the applicants who passed the written test with at least 10 days notice or by direct communication from the PhD Selection Board on the day of the competition.

Selection type B

The PhD Selection Board will make the selection in two phases:

  • 1st phase: evaluation of academic qualifications and documents provided with assignment of a maximum score of 60 points;
  • 2nd phase: applicants who in the 1st phase achieved not less than 42/60 in the academic qualifications evaluation are also admitted to the oral test; the oral test is passed if the applicant achieves a score of at least 21/30. The oral test may also be taken, if possible and according to the Board’s decision, by video conference and in foreign language at the applicant’s prior request, and consists in any case in the assessment of the applicant’s knowledge of at least one foreign language.

If not previously specified by this call for applications, the call for participation in the oral test must take place at least 10 days before the scheduled examination date.
