Marco Polo Project

What is the Marco Polo Project?

The University of Bergamo has taken part in the Marco Polo Project with the aim of strengthening academic co-operation between Italy and the People’s Republic of China regarding exchange schemes for students, undergraduates, researchers and those involved in stages.
The project is the result of collaboration between CRUI (Conferenze of the Italian Universities Rectors) and Confindustria (The Federation of Industry) in order to create a permanent relationship between Italy and China.
CRUI is going to set up two offices, one in China and one in Italy, to co-ordinate the operations referring to anyone interested in exchanges: students, undergraduates, researchers, those involved in stages, those universities taking part in the project, companies involved in the project, diplomatic representatives, relative ministries and so on.

The project will consist of four main areas:

  • Co-ordination of Chinese students arriving in Italy
The Italy-China offices, set up through CRUI, will act as a reference point for Chinese students wishing to enrol at the Italian universities involved in the project, providing information on the courses students are interested in and also on the various reception services available in the various universities.
  • Co-ordination of Chinese undergraduates arriving in Italy
CRUI, through the offices in Italy and China mentioned above, will act as a  co-ordination centre for the placement of Chinese undergraduates interested in attending doctorate courses at the Italian universities taking part in the project.
The office will also be responsible for the various reception services and language training activities as mentioned previously.
  • Co-ordination of Chinese researchers arriving in Italy
CRUI and Confindustria, with the aim of favouring the development of agreements between universities, companies and research centres in both countries, as regards scientific collaboration, as well as research and innovation programmes, will carry out, in collaboration with Chinese partners to be named at a later date, an analysis of the potentialities of greater scientific and technological co-operation between public and private research systems in Italy and China and favour the exchange of researchers.
  • Co-ordination of Chinese visitors involved in stages
The Italy-China offices will also deal with the placement of those about to graduate and young Chinese graduates wishing to take part in stages in Italian companies, including those whose head offices are in China or who have branches in China.
Placement of those wishing to take part in a stage will be effected after the interested parties have successfully attended intensive Italian language courses organized either in Italy or China (at a central point or locally).

Italian for Foreigners and International Relations

The University of Bergamo, with the largest number of exchange study schemes abroad for both students and researchers, is one of the key reference points at European level for the teaching of foreign languages and this facilitates the introduction of foreign students into its teaching programmes thanks to the introduction of English language courses into many Research doctorate courses and Master's courses in the Engineering and Economics departments. A very important role is played by the CIS - Italian Language Courses for Foreigners which offers foreigners courses of both Italian language and culture at various levels.
